Community

Richmond Hill is amongst the wealthiest municipalities in Canada. As such, residents are able to enjoy a wide range of community and cultural activities, a range which might not be found in other towns in the country. In this article, we are going to take a look at some of the different things one can do within the Richmond Hill community.

If you are moving to Richmond Hill from a densely populated urban area, such as that surrounding the Yonge Eglinton condos, then the first thing you will probably note is the large amount of green space within the town. In fact, the sheer number of parks and green areas put the community in the top ten in the country. At last count, there were more than 160 parks in Richmond Hill under the care of the municipal government. These parks include a total of 544 undeveloped green spaces, which can be used for hiking, biking, jogging, and numerous other outdoor recreational pursuits.

The largest park in Richmond Hill is the Richmond Green Sports Centre and Park. This community park includes some of the largest sports centres in the community. These include the 300-seat amphitheatre, the skateboard park, baseball diamonds, and a skating rink. It's the perfect place to drop off the kids for a lesson or game while you go for your laser hair removal appointment at a nearby spa!

Indeed, the devotion to green space sets Richmond Hill far apart from larger cities such as Toronto. Patio sets on condo balconies may overlook parks on every side, with the next nearest development a kilometre or more away!

The sports enthusiast will also find several means of entertainment in Richmond Hill. The most notable sports teams in the city include the Richmond Hill Rams of Junior A hockey fame and the Lightning, a ringette club. Both teams play on land secured by the city through a commercial mortgage broker. Although not the most cutting edge facilities, the arenas do offer that touch of personality that only smaller venues today can provide.

The community of Richmond Hill is also well served by the Richmond Hill Heritage Centre. Founded in 1997, the centre is located in a Regency style home built in 1840. The nature of the building as well as its longevity within the community (it was erected before the town was even incorporated) made it the ideal location for a facility which preserves and displays significant portions of Richmond Hill's cultural heritage.

Richmond Hill also holds several yearly community events throughout the city. Mill Pond is the best known location of these events. This park, home to many trails as well as several species of wildlife, is the venue for both the Summer and Winter Richmond Hill Carnivals. It is also one of two venues which host the summer concert series held by the city each year.
