One of the most common areas to consider when choosing a place to make a home
is the education available in the town one is looking at. There are many reasons
for people to decide to move and put up their houses for sale. Brampton residents
may want to go to a smaller location, which they believe more suitable for a
family lifestyle. Torontonians may be looking for more affordable real estate.
Whatever the reason, many will be interested in the opportunities their children
will have as far as education. Here is a look at what Whitby has to offer.
Whitby has quite a lot going for it from the point of view of those starting
out their family life, perhaps making the switch to family homes from condominiums.
Downtown Toronto does not have the space available to support the range of schools
that Whitby boasts, making the switch an important one for anyone with or considering
starting a family.
There are two governing authorities as far as public education in Whitby. The
Durham District School Board is based in Whitby, and there are 18 elementary
schools and six secondary schools operated by the board in the community. All
of these schools are funded and regulated by the provincial government, with
a set curriculum determined by those whose business cards online or otherwise
indicate they are government officials.
The other major public school system in Whitby is overseen by the Durham Catholic
District School Board. This body oversees the eight elementary and two secondary
schools operated by the Catholic Church in the Whitby region.
Whitby is also the location of Canada's oldest independent schools. Trafalgar
Castle School is a private education facility, which educates girls only, from
grades 6 to 12. The exclusive school has students from all over Canada and indeed
from all over the world.
Whitby is also home to five different Montessori schools. These schools emphasize
self directed learning by the children who are enrolled in them, and many believe
this allows students to find their way earlier and more successfully in life.
The schools tend to have private backing, therefore they are more expensive
than traditional schools. It also means they are run at the higher levels as
businesses, complete with accounting software such as Businessvision and bottom
line directed programs.
When it comes to upper education, Whitby has some limited options available.
If you have hopes of enrolling, or your children enrolling, in a facility with
a high tech program where they can train to be a PCB designer or the like, then
opportunities will have to be sought elsewhere. Currently, Whitby's only
upper education access comes through Durham College. The main campus of the
college is in Oshawa; Whitby itself is home to the Skills Training Centre.
