Healthcare

A chief concern for both parents and senior citizens in any town is health care. One should feel a sense of ease when it comes to health in their community; therefore, state of the art health facilities that are run by experienced, educated staff are essential. Thankfully for the people of Newmarket, such a place exists in the Southlake Regional Hospital. Whether mending bones after a sheet metal bender accident or performing arthroscopic surgery, the team at Southland Regional takes the lead, casting an aura of professionalism and care. Not only has Southlake been caring for people in and around Newmarket for over 85 years, not only has earned a stellar reputation for outstanding patient care and financial and employment stability, but it has quickly become a vital part of Ontario's growing Healthcare research and development sector.

Though it may seem like just another local town hospital on the outside, Southlake is anything but on the inside. In addition to the basic health care services, Southlake and its 2, 400 employees, 380 physicians and 500 volunteers are renowned throughout the province for their excellent service in pediatric and prenatal care, arthritis care, child and adolescent eating disorders, and shoulder surgeries (nothing cosmetic, however; if it's laser hair removal you're after, you'll have to look elsewhere). The hospital also has a fully operational cardiac center, Level 2 Pediatric and Perinatal Care Center, as well as the Eye Institute of Southlake, which can perform around 8,000 surgical cases per year.

With its new state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, Southlake provides a number of diagnostic imaging services as well, including CT Scans, MRI, Mammography, X-Ray, and Ultrasound. The most important breakthroughs for the hospital may come very soon, however, when the doors to their new Cancer Center open later this year. In partnership with Toronto's Princess Margaret Hospital, Southlake will be able to provide the people of Ontario with first class diagnostics, chemo and radiation therapies, surgeries, and support services, bringing a ray of hope to cancer victims and their families. As well, the Cancer Center will allow local physicians and researchers to work hand in hand with internationally renowned cancer experts, bringing a world of knowledge to us and helping to further research of the disease both here and abroad.

For those in need of care beyond what Southlake can provide, there are options as well. From Nova Scotia to BC, home health care is constantly in demand. Thankfully, these services are readily available. Businesses such as GEM Health Care Services (which opened its doors to Newmarket just a few months ago) readily offer the best in private, home and palliative care for those in need. From registered nurses and caregivers to sitters and companions, GEM offers a wide range of services. So whether your loved one lives in a Newmarket home or a Toronto condo, you can rest easy knowing that there are qualified professionals, public and private, willing and able to keep you healthy.
