Things to Consider when Moving to Whitby

A popular place to search for those looking for real estate in the Durham region, Whitby offers a diverse range of both economic and residential opportunities. The city has a population of over 110,000, which makes it a city of a comfortable size for all manner of people, including small business owners, lawyers, city workers, health care workers, and so on. The city is known as Durham’s Business Centre, due to the fact that it is the largest city in the Durham district, a significant advantage.

One of the most important things to consider when you are looking for Whitby, Ontario real estate is that this is a city that includes a couple of different areas, defined by how urban they are. In fact, Whitby tends to run the gamut. There are nice condo buildings with all the regular amenities, along with townhouses and complexes, in the developed and urban southern portion of the city. The northern part of the city, on the other hand, is much more rural; in fact, the city tends to be quite spread out at these points, with separate communities linked by sparse settlements.

So, whether you prefer the high-density urban economic hub of urban Whitby or the more open, but further out, northern rural Whitby is one thing to think about. Another, as when you move to any new city, is the price range you are in, as far as real estate. The parts of southern Whitby that lie on the shores of Lake Ontario are very desirable for many home buyers, but the waterfront location, combined with the shortage of housing, has made prices in the area quite expensive.

On the other hand, the more rural living of the northern areas such as Myrtle, Myrtle Station, and Ashburn might appeal to you. However, because they are further out, you do have to think about the commute (and keep in mind that 110,000 people can make for a lot of traffic during rush hour!).

Those are just a few of the things to consider when you are looking at real estate in the city of Whitby in the Durham region of Ontario. Happy house hunting!
