Neighbourhoods

When looking at real estate in Oakville, Ontario, one will see that there are many different neighbourhoods. Below is a comprehensive listing of the communities in Oakville:

Old Oakville: The original Oakville settlement area, Old Oakville is centred around the Oakville Harbour and is located in South-Central Oakville. This neighbourhood is full of old houses and is the home to the downtown core of Oakville. There are also many apartment buildings in the area. It also contains Oakville's hospital, Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, as well as many schools.

Bronte: Bronte is a commnnity in Southwest Oakville, centred on the Bronte Harbour. It is also the largest community in Oakville and is made up of two areas: the Hopedale District (a suburban residential area) and the Bronte District (a popular tourist destination and shopping area). Oakville real estate agent will boast that there are many schools in the area and the housing in the area mainly consists of single-detached units, as well as some semi-detached units, townhouses, and apartments.

Eastlake: Eastlake is a suburban community located in Southeast Oakville. There are a few schools in the area, as well as many other recreational venues. There are many parks in this community, including Gairloch Gardens, which is a historic garden. Eastlake Community consists mainly of low-density single-detached homes and there has been some recent new development in the area.

Clearview: Clearview, which is sometimes referred to as Sherwood Heights, is located in Central-East Oakville. It is located near the Parkville Belt, which connects Oakville and the city of Mississauga. Clearview is one of Oakville's smallest residential communities and the major feature of this community is the central parkway system, with many bike paths and walkways. The area predominantly consists of single-detached homes, but there are some townhouses and semi-detached houses in the area as well.

College Park: The community of College Park surrounds Sheridan College and, due to the college, the housing reflects the area. There are many older residential districts with detached homes on large lots, as well as many apartments, condominiums, and townhouses. The area is populated with younger people, from the ages of 18-34.

Iroquois-Ridge: Iroquois-Ridge is seperated into two communities: North and South; both are located in North East Oakville. These two communities were designed to work with one another and are predominantly filled with single-family homes, with some semi-detached and townhouses sprinkled throughout. There are many parks in these two communities, with one large park connecting the two. Certain areas are considered environmentally significant in terms of residential development - the goal to preserve as much woodland as possible.

Glen Abbey: Located in West Oakville, Glen Abbey is a large area west of the Glen Abbey Golf Course. This community is primarily residential - the homes tend to be single-family detached, multiple-attached, and apartments. There is a lot of open space in this community, thus why it's so popular for the golf enthusiast - Glen Abbey Golf Course has been used in the past for the Canadian Open. There are also many parks and ravines.

Palermo West: The small community of Palermo West is located in Northwest Oakville, surrounded by the larger community of West Oak Trails. Palermo West was designed for mainly residential use and is actually a relatively small community in relation to the rest of the city. The projected vision of Palermo West is that it will merge with the larger West Oak Trails community and be filled with single-detached homes and townhouses. The community has already begun to grow rapidly, possibly due to its close proximity to the Bronte Creek Provincial Park.

River Oaks: River Oaks, located in North-Central Oakville, is primarily a residential area with a mix of housing types. It is new as a community and has been projected to work in conjuction with the downtown area of the Uptown core. Instead of high rise developments like there is in the Uptown Core, River Oaks is predominantly single-family detached houses, apartments, townhouses, and semi-detached houses.

Uptown Core: Located in North Central Oakville, the Uptown Core is a mix of residential neighbourhoods and commercial businesses. These businesses can range from mom-and-pop grocery stores to government agencies. There is talk of a major transit terminal facility being developed in the area, as an all-city connector. The residential aspect of the Uptown Core is to be of high-density apartment units, attached-units, and single-detached homes. The objective of the Uptown Core is to create a modern, urban feel.

West Oak Trails: West Oak Trails (and Palermo West) is a fairly recent community to Oakville. Located in North Centre West Oakville, the goal of this community is to be highly pedestrian-oriented - everything within walking distance. Residential development is this area has been mainly of single-detached housing, as well as some townhouses, apartments, and semi-detached buildings.

Lakeshore Woods: Located on the outer area of Oakville is Lakeshore Woods. Lakeshore Woods, part of the south-west corner of Oakville, borders on Burlington and is the main connecting area between the two cities.
