Oshawa

There is no doubt that with a population that is over 330,000, Oshawa, Ontario is one of the driving forces when it comes to the Ontario, and even the Canadian economy. With a history that stretches back to the fur trade, the municipality of Oshawa, located between Whitby and Courtice real estate, is one of the oldest and most storied in Canada. It is inextricably intertwined with some of the most important themes in the story of the nation, from the first meetings between trappers and First Nations to the events of the War of 1812 to Canada's World War II production and the Canadian Labour Movement.

Because it has long existed as an autonomous community, thanks to a great economic sector supported by the automobile industry, Oshawa homes have been able to preserve their unique identity despite the growth all around them of some major Canadian centres including Toronto, Mississauga, and others.

As we briefly alluded to above, the community of Oshawa has at its economic base the automobile industry. In fact, one of the nicknames of the community is Motor City North, because the Canadian Division of the General Motors Company has had its headquarters and its major manufacturing plant have called Oshawa home since 1876 (although originally GM was known as the McLaughlin Carriage Company). The development, improvement, and sales policies of the Canadian branch of GM have always been located in Oshawa and the result has been a steady source of employment for most of the population, with several sectors branching off of the automobile success.

In fact, the impact of the automobile industry in Oshawa has extended throughout the cultural and educational makeup of the city, to the very highest levels. Anyone interested in real estate in Oshawa might be interested to know that there are no less than three centres of higher learning in the city, including Durham College, Trent University, and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Durham College is the only upper-level educational facility in the country to offer a degree in Automotive and Nuclear Engineering.

Concern over the troubled times of the North American auto industry appear not to have dampened enthusiasm as far as people looking at Oshawa real estate, as the city continues to be one of the fastest growing municipalities within Canada. This is no doubt in part to the great fall back position of many of the communities within the Golden Horseshoe as bedroom communities for people who find employment in the vast oasis that is Toronto, while avoiding the steep housing prices in that area.
